What this is
The classical oil-based Kumkumadi Tailam — the formulation that every commercial Ayurvedic brand sells. Distinct from the Sushruta Vyanga-hara Ghrita (which uses ghee as base); this Kumkumadi uses sesame oil, making it lighter, more shelf-stable, and easier to absorb on facial skin.
Bhaishajya Ratnavali (18th century CE) is the mature codification of this formula. Earlier precursors include Sushruta Cikitsa 25.20 (the Vyanga-hara Ghrita) and several intermediate variants in Sahasrayogam.
Why this works
The chemistry mirrors the Vyanga-hara Ghrita but in an oil base:
- Saffron (Kumkuma) is the hero — its crocins are validated tyrosinase inhibitors and chronic-photoaging antagonists
- Sandalwood + Padmaka + Yashtimadhu + Manjishtha + Sariva — the Varnya-Mahakashaya core, all Pitta-pacifying and tyrosinase-modulating
- Astavarga substitutes (Ashwagandha + Shatavari + Vidari) — phyto-oestrogenic, skin-plumping; replaces the commercially-extinct Kakolyadi-gana herbs
- Sesame oil base — penetrates the skin barrier readily (validated in modern skin-penetration studies); occlusive enough to lock in moisture overnight
Sourcing premium grade
For commercial production, the differentiator is sourcing:
- Saffron: Kashmir Mongra (1 strand from a single flower stigma) or Iranian Sargol. Never powdered (always adulterated).
- Sandalwood: registered Mysore plantation, CITES-traceable.
- Sesame oil: cold-pressed unrefined, single-origin, organic.
Application protocol
- Cleanse face with gentle wash (the Mukha-prakshalana from Recipe A6 ideal)
- Pat dry; face must be slightly damp, not wet
- 2-3 drops of Kumkumadi into clean palm
- Warm between palms 5 seconds
- Press onto face — do not rub. Use upward strokes only
- Wait 1-2 minutes for absorption
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase
- Morning: rinse with cool water + your daily face wash
For visible difference: 6 weeks minimum, 3 months ideal.
Contraindications
- active acne flare
- pregnancy
- open wounds
- Rakta-chandana CITES Appendix II - source legally
- Chandana CITES Appendix II
