Madhyama Paka
Madhyama-pāka मध्यम-पाक
paka
Also: medium cook
The medium cook — the default end-point for most Ayurvedic medicated oils and ghees. Reached when:
- The spent Kalka, when lifted on the ladle and rolled between thumb and forefinger, forms a firm pellet that holds its shape (Varti-vat, “like a wick”)
- The oil colour has deepened
- The aromatic intensity has matured (not raw, not faded)
- No browning of the Kalka
Use case:
- Abhyanga (daily massage oils)
- Internal Snehana (oral oleation)
- Basti (medicated enema)
- Most cosmetic face oils and hair oils
Most Bhavaprakasha and Sahasrayoga commercial formulas target Madhyama paka. Of the three pakas, this is the one with the longest practical shelf life that still preserves bioactive content.
