Khara Paka
Khara-pāka खर-पाक
paka
Also: hard cook, deep cook
The hardest correct end-point. Reached when:
- The spent Kalka, dropped on a hot surface, hisses but does not crackle violently
- The Kalka breaks like wax when cooled
- The oil itself is deeply infused, sometimes resin-like in viscosity
- Just short of any charred smell
Use case:
- External Lepas for severe Kushtha (skin disease)
- Vrana Ropana (wound healing) oils
- Long shelf-life external preparations
Beyond Khara paka is Dahyamana (“being-burnt”) — the Kalka browns, smoke appears, the active compounds are destroyed. Discard immediately if you reach this stage.
For cosmetic-grade face and hair oils, stop at Madhyama paka, not Khara. Khara-paka oils are too transformed and lose their aromatic top notes.
