Varnya Mahakashaya
Varṇya Mahākaṣāya वर्ण्य महाकषाय
Complexion-promoters — the canonical 10 herbs for skin brightness, evenness, and lustre.
The single most important classical group for Ayurvedic cosmetology. Every classical and modern complexion-improving formula draws 4-6 of its herbs from this list.
Charaka Sutra 4.10.-(2): “Sandalwood, fragrant poon, Himalayan cherry, cuscus grass, liquorice, madder, Indian sarsaparilla, white yam and white and black scutch grass — these ten are complexion-promoters.”
Why these 10
Charaka’s Varnya group is not arbitrary. The 10 herbs share three pharmacological features:
- Cooling (Shita-virya) — they pacify Pitta, the heat-dosha that causes redness, irritation, photo-aging, and the underlying tendency to pigmentation
- Sweet or astringent (Madhura / Kashaya-rasa) — they nourish the Rasa Dhātu (the plasma + interstitial fluid that feeds the skin from inside)
- Madhura-vipaka — the post-digestive sweet effect, which supports long-term tissue rejuvenation
Combined externally as a Lepa or in the Kalka of a face oil, these 10 herbs deliver complexion-improvement through three mechanisms documented by modern dermatology:
- Tyrosinase inhibition (glabridin in Yashtimadhu; anthraquinones in Manjishtha)
- Anti-oxidant + anti-inflammatory (sandalwood santalols; vetiver khusol)
- Photo-protective barrier strengthening (Padmaka tannins; Durva polyphenols)
How Varnya herbs combine with other groups
Almost every classical face-oil / face-ghrita / face-lepa is built like this:
Base oil or ghee (sneha)
+ 4-6 herbs from Varnya Mahakashaya ← complexion
+ 2-3 herbs from Sarivadi-gana ← cooling face wash logic
+ 2-3 herbs from Eladi-gana ← aromatic, anti-pimple
+ 1-2 herbs from Kakolyadi-gana ← rejuvenation (rasayana)
+ Saffron (Kumkuma) as the hero pigment
This template produces every modern Kumkumadi Tailam variant.
