One of the Varnya 10. The root is sweet-bitter and contains 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy benzaldehyde as its principal aromatic — vanilla-coumarin-like character. Used in face oils (Sarivadi gana), summer body oils, and as an internal blood-purifying Rasayana.

The “two Sarivas”: Charaka cites Shveta (white) Sariva = Hemidesmus indicus; Krishna (black) Sariva = Ichnocarpus frutescens or Cryptolepis buchananii. Cosmetically interchangeable.
