Hair vatakapha

Persistent flaking, itching, and crusting of the scalp — described in classical Ayurveda as Darunaka, a Kshudra-roga of the scalp driven by Vata-Kapha imbalance. Treated with Neem-based washes, Karanja oil, and pre-bath scalp massage with medicated tailas.

Dandruff & scalp itch

A simple problem with a layered cause

The story is almost universal — you scratch your scalp absent-mindedly, white flakes fall onto your dark shirt, and you wonder when this started and what you ate last week. Classical Ayurveda calls this Darunaka — literally, “what makes hard” — referring to the dry, hardened crust the scalp develops.

In Sushruta Samhita Nidana Sthana 13, Darunaka is listed among the Kshudra-rogas (minor diseases) of the scalp. The cause is given as a combination of Vata (which dries the epithelium) and Kapha (which simultaneously produces greasy accumulation). To a modern eye, this dual mechanism is precisely what Malassezia-driven seborrheic dermatitis looks like — a yeast feeding on sebum, producing inflammation and flaking. Two thousand years apart, the descriptions converge.

The classical protocol

Three steps, in order, used twice weekly:

  1. Pre-bath oil massage with Neem Taila or Karanja Taila, warmed slightly, massaged into the scalp 30–45 minutes before bath. The neem azadirachtin and karanja karanjin are both well-documented anti-Malassezia agents.
  2. Udvartana — a gentle scrub with Triphala or Yashtimadhu powder, applied to the still-oiled scalp and worked in for 2 minutes. This dislodges the softened crust.
  3. Wash with Shikakai-Reetha decoction (or Shikakai-based shampoo). The natural saponins cleanse without stripping the scalp’s lipid barrier — the way most commercial sulfate shampoos do, often making dandruff worse.

For stubborn cases, Nalpamaradi Taila (made from the four sacred Ficus trees — Vata, Ashvattha, Udumbara, Plaksha) is applied warm, left for 30 minutes, then washed off.

Maithra’s range for dandruff

We make several products in this lineage at our facility. If you are unsure where to begin: start with Anti-Dandruff Scalp Treatment Oil twice weekly (pre-bath), Shikakai Powder as a natural wash, and Neem Powder as a once-weekly pack mixed with curd.

When the pattern doesn’t break

If you have followed the protocol for 6 weeks and the flaking is unchanged — or if you see redness, hair loss in patches, or large yellow-greasy flakes (classic seborrheic dermatitis pattern) — please see a vaidya. At AyurDarshan Hospital, persistent Darunaka is approached with internal Aragvadhadi kashayam, weekly Shiroabhyanga, and dietary Pitta-Kapha pacification.

When to consult a vaidya See a vaidya or dermatologist if dandruff is accompanied by hair loss in the affected patches, if the scalp is red and inflamed, if flakes are large and yellow-greasy (suggesting seborrheic dermatitis), if there is recurrent secondary infection, or if symptoms persist after 6 weeks of consistent home treatment.
