Darunaka (dandruff); scalp itch.
Anti-Dandruff Scalp Treatment Oil
For Darunaka — itchy, flaky, Pitta-Kapha scalp.
Karanja-Neem pre-bath oil for Darunaka — itchy, flaky, seborrheic scalp.
Classical anti-fungal scalp oil. Karanja and Neem oils for Malassezia control; Bhringaraja and Yashtimadhu for inflammation. Apply warm to scalp 30 minutes before bath, twice weekly, for 6 weeks.
The story
Darunaka is the Sanskrit name for what we now call dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Classical Sushruta Samhita Nidana Sthana 13 gives a precise mechanism: Vata-Kapha imbalance dries the scalp epithelium while simultaneously producing greasy accumulation in the follicles — the same dual presentation a modern dermatologist describes as Malassezia-driven seborrheic dermatitis.
This treatment oil is a Karanja-Neem base — the two most-documented antifungal herbs in classical formulary — with supporting Bhringaraja and Yashtimadhu for scalp soothing.
How it works
- Karanja oil: contains karanjin, a documented anti-Malassezia agent
- Neem oil: nimbidin and azadirachtin, broad-spectrum antifungal
- Bhringaraja: anti-inflammatory action on the scalp, reduces redness
- Yashtimadhu: licorice’s glabridin calms itch
Pre-bath warm-oil application softens the accumulated sebum and crust, making it easier to wash out during shampoo — exactly the mechanism a dermatologist describes when prescribing salicylic acid as a pre-treatment.
How to use it
- Pre-bath: warm the oil slightly, part scalp into sections, massage into scalp (focus on flaky areas), leave 30 minutes
- Follow with mild shampoo — Maithra’s Triphala-Reetha-Shikakai shampoo is well-paired for Darunaka
- Frequency: twice weekly for the first 6 weeks; once weekly for maintenance
Who it’s for
Persistent dandruff that hasn’t responded to commercial anti-dandruff shampoos. Scalp itch, especially at night. Visible flakes on dark clothing. Seborrheic dermatitis pattern.
The honest part
If after 6 weeks of consistent use the flaking is unchanged, or if you see hair loss in the flaky patches, please see a vaidya or dermatologist — that pattern can indicate scalp psoriasis or fungal infection that needs different treatment. Pregnancy-safe externally.
