Neem Leaf Powder
Nimba — the village antiseptic.
Nimba — the village antiseptic. The single most-prescribed herb in classical Ayurvedic skin and scalp protocols.
Pure single-drug Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf powder. Used as a face pack for active acne (with Haridra and rose water), as a scalp pack for fungal dandruff, or in bath water for body acne and skin clarity.
The story
The classical Indian village had one universal medicine: a Neem tree in the courtyard. Nimba (Azadirachta indica) appears more often in classical Ayurvedic prescriptions than any other single herb. Sushruta Samhita Chikitsa Sthana devotes entire chapters to Neem-based preparations for skin disease (kushtha), wound care, dental hygiene, and pest control.
For the modern Maithra customer, Neem matters in three places: as a face pack for active acne, as a scalp wash for dandruff and lice, and as a bath powder addition for general skin clarity.
How it works
Neem’s azadirachtin and nimbidin are documented antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory agents. The antifungal action is the relevant one for dandruff (which is largely Malassezia-driven); the antibacterial action handles C. acnes in active pimples; the anti-inflammatory action calms the redness around both.
Classical preparations are notably bitter and sharp — which is part of the therapeutic intent. The tikta (bitter) rasa is what’s doing the work; sweetening it with honey or rose water makes it easier to use but doesn’t reduce the activity.
How to use it
- For active acne: 1 tablespoon Neem powder + ½ teaspoon Haridra (turmeric) + rose water to a paste. Apply to clean face, leave 10–15 minutes (not longer — Neem is strong), wash off with cool water. Twice weekly.
- As a scalp pack for dandruff: 2 tablespoons mixed with curd, applied to scalp, left 20 minutes, washed out.
- In bath water: 2 tablespoons in a small muslin pouch, dropped into warm bath water — for body acne and general skin clarity.
Who it’s for
Active acne with pustules, fungal dandruff, body acne, recurring skin infections, lice prevention. Not for very dry or sensitive skin in winter (Neem is drying — pair it with a moisturiser).
The honest part
Neem is strong. Start with shorter contact times (5 minutes), see how your skin responds, build up to 15 minutes maximum. If skin feels tight or itchy after application, dilute next time. Pregnancy: external use is fine; do not take Neem internally during pregnancy.
