Face vatapitta

The fine lines, loss of skin firmness, and slow brightness decline that accompany ageing — described in Ayurveda as Vali (wrinkles) and Palita (greying). Slowed with Rasayana therapy (the rejuvenation tradition), daily abhyanga, Kumkumadi-class facial oils, and consistent sleep + diet.

Ageing & wrinkles

The lineage of Rasayana

Of the eight classical branches of Ayurveda, Rasayana — the science of rejuvenation — is the one Charaka calls most important. The reason: every other branch addresses an existing condition; Rasayana addresses the underlying decline that produces every condition. In Charaka’s vocabulary, ageing is jara — and jara is something the texts believed could be substantially slowed, though never stopped.

The classical observation is precise: ageing accelerates when ojas (the body’s vital essence — roughly, immune reserve and metabolic vigour) is depleted. The Rasayana toolkit aims to preserve ojas through three interventions:

  1. Internal rejuvenatives — Amalaki, Chyavanprash, Brahmi, Ashwagandha
  2. External nourishing tailas — Kumkumadi for the face, Mahanarayana for the body
  3. Lifestyle — daily abhyanga, sufficient sleep, balanced sexual energy, regular schedule (dinacharya)

What is remarkable is how well this aligns with modern systems-biology approaches to ageing — which now emphasise sleep, oxidative stress reduction, antioxidants, and stress management. The vocabulary differs; the convergence is real.

The classical Rasayana protocol

For visible facial ageing, the canonical formulation is Kumkumadi Taila — the saffron-based oil attributed to Vagbhata’s Ashtanga Hridaya Uttarasthana. Applied at night, two drops, massaged in circles, left overnight. Saffron’s crocin is among the most-studied skin antioxidants in current literature; Manjishtha and Yashtimadhu in the formulation provide tone-evening and brightness.

For lifestyle:

  • Daily Abhyanga with sesame oil or Ksheerabala Taila — preserves medas (subcutaneous fat) and mamsa (muscle) elasticity
  • Amalaki Rasayana internally — one teaspoon of Amalaki powder with warm water, daily
  • Triphala at night — supports digestion and elimination, both critical to skin clarity
  • Sleep before 10 PM — the texts are emphatic: the deepest restorative sleep is between 10 PM and 2 AM

Maithra’s range

If you are unsure where to begin:

  • Mukhakanthi Facial Oil — the Maithra Kumkumadi descendant for nightly use
  • Saffron Face Gel — for daytime application
  • Wrinkle-Free Under Eye Cream — targets the thin, ageing-prone periorbital skin
  • Amla Powder — take internally as Rasayana, or apply as weekly pack
  • Triphala Choornam — taken at night, supports the whole-body Rasayana approach

The honest, non-romantic point

Topical anti-ageing care can take a 50-year-old’s face to a well-cared-for 50-year-old’s face. It cannot make it a 30-year-old’s face — and any product promising that is overstating biology. The Rasayana texts are clear-eyed about this: the goal is jara-mrityu-nivaraka — slowing decline, not reversing it.

If you want a comprehensive Rasayana protocol individualised to your constitution and current state, please consult a qualified vaidya. At AyurDarshan, our Rasayana programmes typically run for 90 days, combining internal rejuvenatives, daily Snehana, and dietary protocol — supervised by a vaidya.

When to consult a vaidya See a vaidya for a personalised Rasayana protocol if you want a comprehensive anti-ageing programme — these are individualised by *prakriti* (constitution), age, and current dosha state. Consult a dermatologist if you notice rapid loss of skin elasticity, sudden appearance of multiple deep wrinkles, hair greying coinciding with fatigue and weight changes (rule out thyroid/menopause), or pigmented patches with irregular borders (rule out lentigines and skin cancer).
