Mukhakanthi Facial Oil

Saffron-led facial oil in the Kumkumadi Tailam lineage. Softened proportions for nightly use without the staining of the classical concentrated formula. For ageing, dullness, mild pigmentation, and dry-pattern skin.

The story

In Sanskrit cosmetic vocabulary, Mukha-kanti means facial radiance — and the phrase appears in classical descriptions of well-cared-for skin (sushobha) in Charaka Sutrasthana. Mukhakanthi Facial Oil is Maithra’s daily-radiance descendant of the Kumkumadi Tailam lineage — the saffron-based facial oil attributed to Vagbhata.

How it works

The classical Kumkumadi formula combines saffron (Kumkuma) for radiance, manjishtha and chandana for cooling and brightening, yashtimadhu for tone evening, and a base of sesame oil cooked with milk. Maithra’s Mukhakanthi softens the proportions for daily-use comfort (the classical Kumkumadi is thicker, intended for spot treatment).

Modern research on saffron’s crocin and crocetin compounds shows direct evidence of UV-protective and anti-pigmentation activity at the cellular level — which is what the classical texts have claimed for it all along, in their own vocabulary.

How to use it

  • At night: 3 drops, warmed in palms, pressed and massaged in upward circles into clean dry face. Leave overnight, wash in the morning. The classical evening protocol.
  • As an under-eye treatment: a single drop pressed gently around the eye socket — saffron’s antioxidant action is well-suited to the thin periocular skin.
  • Frequency: nightly for 8 weeks for visible change; thereafter, 4–5 times a week for maintenance.

Who it’s for

Ageing skin, dull or fatigued complexion, mild pigmentation, post-acne marks, dry-pattern skin. All ages from 25 upward. Safe for sensitive skin and during pregnancy.

The honest part

For severe pigmentation, the more concentrated Kumkumadi Tailam (the classical version) works faster — Mukhakanthi is the daily-radiance version, gentler, slower, less stainy. For visible brightening, expect 4–6 weeks. Saffron is genuinely effective, but it works through accumulation, not magic.
