Why Rasanjana over antimony

The classical Sauviranjana (antimony kohl) is regulated in EU and US for cosmetic-license use. Rasanjana — a concentrated Daru-haridra (Berberis aristata) heartwood extract in cow ghee — is the cosmetic-acceptable alternative in all jurisdictions. Imparts a yellow-orange tone rather than black; for black, use modern iron-oxide black additive.

Preparation

  1. Boil 100 g Daru-haridra in 500 ml water down to 30 ml — a very thick, deep yellow extract.
  2. Strain. Mix with melted ghee (cooled to 50 °C).
  3. Pour into small ceramic dish; let cool.
  4. Mix in camphor at last minute.
  5. Roll into thin wicks or store as a paste.
