Snana Choornam

The story

In Kerala homes a generation ago, the daily shower was preceded by an ubtan — a body powder applied to oiled skin, scrubbed off in the shower, leaving the skin clean, even-toned, and pleasantly fragrant. The powder was called Snana Choornam — snana meaning bath, choornam meaning powder.

The classical formulation combines green gram (mudga), turmeric, sandalwood, manjishtha, and a base of bengal gram flour — every ingredient working on a different aspect of skin care.

How it works

• Green gram & bengal gram flour: gentle exfoliation; mild saponins lift surface oil
• Haridra & Kasthuri-manjal: antimicrobial, brightening
• Manjishtha & Chandana: tone-evening, cooling
• Rose petals: aromatic, slightly humectant

Unlike commercial body scrubs that strip the skin, Snana Choornam cleanses with replacement — removing dead epidermis while depositing herbal actives.

How to use it

• The classical sequence: oil the body lightly with sesame or coconut oil (5 minutes pre-shower)
• Make a paste: 3 tablespoons Snana Choornam + warm water → spreadable paste
• Apply to oiled skin all over body, focusing on knees, elbows, neck, underarms
• Scrub gently in circles for 2–3 minutes
• Shower with warm water; no soap needed afterwards
• Frequency: every alternate day, or 3 times a week

Who it’s for

Anyone wanting daily ubtan ritual. All skin types. Excellent for pre-monsoon and post-monsoon skin transition. Brides preparing for weddings (combine with kasthuri manjal). Pregnancy-safe.

The honest part

The classical use is with oil first — applying the powder to dry skin will feel harsher and strip the moisture barrier. Oil + powder + warm water is the sequence.
