The story
The classical Eladi formula appears in two forms in Vagbhata’s Ashtanga Hridaya Uttarasthana: as a taila (the cooked oil) and as a churna (the dry powder for lepa application). The dry powder version — Eladi Choornam — is the more flexible: it can be mixed with milk, rose water, honey, or curd depending on skin type and what the situation calls for.
For pigmentation, mixed with milk: it becomes a brightening lepa. For acne, mixed with rose water: it becomes a clarifying mask. For dryness, mixed with honey: it becomes a nourishing pack. The same powder, three uses.
How it works
The powder contains cardamom (Ela), saffron (Kumkuma), sandalwood (Chandana), licorice (Yashtimadhu), and supporting herbs — the same herbs as Eladi keram but in their dry form, so the active compounds release fresh on contact with the chosen liquid medium.
How to use it
- For radiance: 1 tablespoon + 2 tablespoons milk → smooth paste, apply, leave 15 min, wash off. Twice weekly.
- For acne and oiliness: 1 tablespoon + rose water + ½ teaspoon Multani-mitti → apply to oily zones only, leave 10 min, wash off.
- For dryness: 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon honey + 1 tablespoon warm milk → apply, leave 15 min, wash off.
