Brightening Eladhikeram
Eladi keram — cardamom, saffron, sesame.
Eladi keram — the aromatic facial radiance taila from Vagbhata's Ashtanga Hridaya.
Cardamom-saffron-sandalwood facial oil, slow-cooked in sesame and milk. A daily-use radiance taila for dull, tired, or seasonally-stressed skin. Absorbs cleanly under makeup or sunscreen.
The story
Eladi keram — Eladi taila, literally “oil of cardamom and companions” — is the aromatic facial taila described in Vagbhata’s Ashtanga Hridaya Uttarasthana. Ela (cardamom) is the eponymous ingredient, but the formulation also contains saffron (Kumkuma), sandalwood (Chandana), licorice (Yashtimadhu), and a base of sesame oil cooked with milk.
The classical use was twofold: as a facial taila for radiance (kanti-prada), and as a pratisarana — a herbal application before formal occasions, weddings, and festivals.
How it works
Cardamom’s terpenes provide the characteristic aromatic uplift; saffron’s crocin and picrocrocin are documented antioxidants with direct skin-brightening effects; chandana cools and evens tone; yashtimadhu (with its glabridin content) gives the soft, even, glowing finish that’s the hallmark of the formulation.
Unlike thick night creams, Eladi keram absorbs cleanly without leaving a film — making it suitable for daytime application under makeup or before going out.
How to use it
- As a daytime moisturiser: 2–3 drops, smoothed into damp face after cleansing, before sunscreen.
- As a pre-event glow: 4 drops massaged into clean face 30 minutes before makeup application. The classical use.
- As a body radiance oil: warm slightly, apply to shoulders, neck, décolletage before formal wear.
Who it’s for
Anyone wanting a daily-use radiance oil. All skin types. Safe for sensitive skin, pregnancy. Particularly suited to dull, tired skin from late nights, travel, or seasonal change.
The honest part
This is a radiance oil — meaning it enhances the visible glow of healthy skin. It is not a treatment oil for acne, severe pigmentation, or skin disease — for those, use the targeted Kumkumadi Tailam or Nalpamaradi Tailam instead. Eladi is the everyday brightener.
