A massage with a dry or semi-dry powder of herbs, performed AGAINST the direction of body hair (Pratiloma). The Ayurvedic equivalent of exfoliation, lymphatic-drainage massage, and a soap replacement, all in one.

Sushruta Cikitsa 24.28: “The deranged Vayu of the body is restored to its normal condition by the help of Udvartana. It reduces the fat and the aggravated Kapha of the system, smoothes and cleanses the skin, and imparts a firmness to the limbs.”

Verse 24.29: “Utsadana specifically improves the complexion of females and gives a lovely appearance, cleanliness, beauty and suppleness to the female form.”

Protocol

  1. Take 1 Tbsp of the Churna (powder)
  2. Optional: mix with sesame oil + a little warm water (Snigdha) OR use dry (Ruksha)
  3. Massage onto damp skin in upward strokes against the direction of body hair
  4. 5-7 minutes per body region; total 20-30 min for whole body
  5. Rinse with warm water in a Snana (bath)
  6. After bath, apply a thin film of Abhyanga oil

Frequency

  • Daily if practising the full Dinacharya
  • 2-3× per week for normal cosmetic upkeep
  • Daily for 3-4 weeks for weight-reduction protocols, then alternate days
