Bringaraja Powder

Pure single-drug Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba) powder. The classical Keshya herb — used as a pre-bath scalp pack, in home-made hair oils, or as an internal Rasayana for hair fall and premature greying.

The story

Walk into any Kerala home at dusk and you will likely see a grandmother oiling a granddaughter’s hair on the veranda — and the smell on the air will be Bhringaraja. Eclipta alba, the herb the classical texts call Keshya — literally, “the friend of hair” — has carried that name for the better part of two millennia.

In Sushruta Samhita Nidana Sthana (13.34), Bhringaraja is the hero ingredient prescribed for Khalitya (hair fall) and Palitya (premature greying). The classical Bhringaraja Taila — Bhringaraja paste cooked slowly with sesame oil, cow’s milk, and Amalaki — is the most-prescribed external therapy for both conditions.

How it works

Bhringaraja extracts have shown 5α-reductase inhibition in vitro — the same enzymatic pathway as finasteride. In plain language: it reduces the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is the primary hormonal driver of androgenetic hair loss. Combined with its anti-inflammatory action on the scalp, this gives both the early-stage thinning and the seborrheic-dermatitis pattern of hair loss a fighting chance.

The classical preparation method (slow cooking in oil with milk) extracts both the fat-soluble actives and the milk-bound proteins together — modern lab extraction tends to capture only one fraction.

How to use it

  • As a pre-bath scalp pack: 2 tablespoons of Bringaraja powder mixed with warm water to a thin paste. Massaged into the scalp, left 30 minutes, washed out with mild shampoo. Twice weekly.
  • In a hair oil: mix 1 tablespoon with 100 ml warm sesame or coconut oil, infuse for 2 hours on low heat, strain, store. Apply twice weekly before bath.
  • As an internal Rasayana: ½ teaspoon with warm milk at night — for hair fall driven by Pitta imbalance.

Who it’s for

Anyone losing more than 100 strands a day, anyone with greying before 35, anyone with persistent dandruff or scalp itch. Safe for pregnancy use externally.

The honest part

The hair-growth cycle is slow. Visible reduction in shedding appears at the 8–12 week mark; regrowth at 6–9 months. Anyone promising results faster is misreading biology.
