Anti-Tan Cream
Cooling Pitta — what classical Kerala did for sun damage.
Daily cream version of the classical Nalpamaradi tan-fading protocol.
Nalpamaradi-based leave-on cream — the four sacred Ficus species combined with Manjishtha, Chandana, and Lodhra. Fades sun-induced pigmentation gradually over 6–8 weeks of consistent use. Pair with daily SPF.
The story
Kerala is hot, sunny, and humid — and the classical Ashtanga Hridaya was written for exactly this climate. Vagbhata’s Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) chapter spends pages on what to do when the sun darkens and roughens the skin: cooling lepas, white cotton clothing, sweet foods, milk and ghee, and — most importantly — Nalpamaradi Taila, the four sacred Ficus oil that has been Kerala’s flagship sun-tan therapy for centuries.
Maithra’s Anti-Tan Cream is the modern, leave-on cream version of that classical Nalpamaradi protocol — the same four Ficus species (Banyan, Peepal, Cluster Fig, Indian Fig), plus Manjishtha, Chandana, and Lodhra.
How it works
The four Ficus species are rich in tannins — astringent polyphenols that gently tighten and brighten the surface of the skin. Manjishtha provides tyrosinase inhibition (slowing new melanin production). Chandana (sandalwood) cools the inflammation that accompanies sun damage. Lodhra astringes and evens tone.
Unlike a chemical sunblock that prevents tanning, this works by fading tanning that has already occurred — gradually, over weeks, by slowing melanocyte activity and accelerating epidermal turnover.
How to use it
- Daily, after bath, on tan-affected areas (face, neck, hands, feet). Massage in until absorbed, 2–3 minutes per area.
- For deep tan, use twice daily for the first 30 days, then once daily for maintenance.
- Pair with daily SPF — this is non-negotiable. The cream fades existing tan; without SPF, new tan replaces old tan and you go in circles.
Who it’s for
Sun-damaged skin, uneven hand/foot/neck tone, post-summer tan that won’t fade, melasma-pattern pigmentation. Safe for all skin types.
The honest part
Expect visible fading at week 6–8 of consistent use. The classical texts are clear: cooling lepas work gradually. Any product promising “fairness in 7 days” is overstating biology — and probably contains hydroquinone or steroids, which we don’t use.
